The holidays are coming — and with them, full schedules, tempting treats, and a whole lot of stress disguised as “fun.” It’s easy to let your healthy routines slide, promising yourself you’ll get back on track in January. But what if this year could feel different?
That’s exactly what The Holiday Sanity Series is all about — helping you stay healthy and sane through the season. Over the next few weeks, I’ll share simple strategies to help you move more, eat mindfully, and actually enjoy this time of year without guilt or burnout.
Let’s start by building your foundation before the chaos kicks in.
Why Starting Strong Matters
Most people wait until after Thanksgiving to think about their health goals again. But by then, the momentum’s gone, the stress has piled up, and “I’ll start fresh in January” becomes the norm.
The truth? You don’t need perfection to feel good through the holidays — you just need consistency. A few small habits can keep your energy up, your mindset steady, and your body feeling its best (even when there’s pie involved).
And here’s something to remember when those tricky days pop up: a few indulgent meals or skipped workouts don’t define your season. The holidays may last about two months, but most of those days aren’t filled with parties or celebrations. Five days don’t determine your success — the other fifty-five do.
5 Simple Habits to Hold Onto This Holiday Season
1. Move Your Body Regularly — In Any Way That Feels Good
It doesn’t have to be a long workout. A 10-minute walk, a few stretches between meetings, or dancing while you cook dinner all count. Movement keeps stress down and energy up — two things we could all use a little more of this time of year. And it doesn’t have to be every day! I personally schedule at least one to two days a week where I don’t worry about a full workout or even a step goal.
2. Hydrate In Between Your Coffee, Hot Cocoa, and Cocktail
Drinking water is a simple act that you have complete control over. Aim to carry a water bottle with you daily and have a full glass of water between non-water drinks. Pro tip: drink your water in your wine or cocktail glass instead of separately. It sounds goofy, but it ensures you drink a full glass before starting another drink.
3. Eat Balanced Most of the Time
No need to overhaul your meals — just aim for a mix of protein, produce, and healthy fat at most meals. The goal isn’t restriction; it’s balance that helps you feel satisfied and steady.
4. Protect Your Sleep Like Your Sanity Depends on It (Because It Does)
Even one or two late nights can throw off your mood and motivation. Try setting a “bedtime alarm” — a gentle reminder to start winding down instead of scrolling. Practice saying no to “school night” commitments if they don’t serve you. Sleep deprivation going into a stressful workday makes life tough!
5. Plan, Don’t Wing It
If you can look ahead at your week and plan a few healthy meals, workouts, or even rest days, you’ll feel more in control when life gets busy. Sunday night planning is my secret weapon for staying grounded through the holidays.
A Little Imperfection Goes a Long Way
You don’t have to do all of this perfectly — or all at once. The goal is to keep showing up for yourself in small ways, even when life gets messy. When you stay consistent with the basics, it’s easier to enjoy the holiday treats and traditions guilt-free.
